The Money is in the list. Every small business owner has heard this phrase at least once since going into business. We’ve found that in order for our business to grow we need to connect with the right people. My best clients come from referral partners who respect my work, price, and time.
Recently I’ve been looking for ways to offer my Headshot Clients a little more ‘added value’. Now let me say I am a good photographer and while I think I give my clients a lot there is still a huge service gap between Headshots and Family Sessions. With headshots, since the client typically does not place a print order, it’s easy for them to get lost and forgotten about. The typical business owner receives their digital files via a USB drive and if they elected to not purchase a tangabile print product, there are no canvas’ to deliver and hang, or invitations to address. While I do place a strong emphasis on follow up because clients often forget to update their Social Media profile photos, the business owner comes and sees me every few years and occasionally asks if I provide family portrait sessions too. Which I offer.
So in wanting to give my clients more I have to ask WHAT that more looked like. I want them to have a next step. A connection. I wanted a better way to serve my clients and offer them a more vulue based session.
I remember when I lost my Corporate job and another Photographer said to me hey why don’t you try this networking group, it has women your age and they may serve as your target client. I had no idea what networking was considering I was a 9-5er, but today I am forever grateful to her for taking my hand and inviting me to that lunch.
I don’t want ANY other new business owner, starting out or veteran, to ever have to struggle looking for a good connection. It’s hard enough trying to figure out how to build a business let alone build a network.
