I remember it like it was yesterday! 3 years ago this month, the day I was forced to start my own business. I went into my center city Philadelphia office, the office I occupied as a non-profit housing and credit counselor. The way my office manager walked in and asked to see me. In the office I sat as they explained that my position was eliminated and that was it. They slide a folder across the desk and wished me well.
WOW. SO OUT THE DOOR I GO. I was at work for 12 minutes that day. 12! I get my car from the parking garage and drive home. longest drive ever…
Now 3 years later I have my own business. it could be better, but it could be worse too. I have been given the opportunity to work and meet some of the most amazing people EVER!
I have also learned a tremendous amount. Owning a business is one of the hardest things you will ever do aside from raising a family. Let it be said that having a strong foundation is the most important parts to having and starting a business. Many will argue that you need to have a business plan but it’s not just that. You need to have an understanding of what that business plan represent. You also need to know yourself. I have learned more about myself in the last 3 years than I knew in the whole of my life! I am no longer just Wanda Thomas, I am WANDA THOMAS OWNER OF MADCRIS IMAGES. I represent something. As small business owners I think we get so lost in the business building that we forget there are REAL PEOPLE out there watching us. You know those like and follower you have represent real people and they do check in on you!
I never knew it was going to be this hard, but I will tell you this truth…I wont change the last 3 years for all the coffee beans in Columbia. I love what I do. I love my clients, I love the mistakes I have made. I look forward to continued growth as mom, wife, and business owner.
So 3 years later here we are. I have been honored with having some of the best clients in front of my lens. Having met some of the most well know photographers in the industry, and worked along side some amazing people. It’s been quite a ride. I have been published and wrote a book. But none of this would have ever been possible with people who believe in me.
