Today is our son’s 11th Birthday. My son is my world. I love my daughter as well but she’s more of a Daddy’s Girl and I understand that our relationship will develop differently and over time.
My pregnancy with Cris was a hard one. I knew VERY EARLY that my son’s personality was going to be that of a person who would dig in his heels and not budge, and when need be, would be very persistent and have a level of patience needed until he got his way.
Cris was born a week early via c-section and through his first year, EVERYTHING felt like a challenge with him. From his sleep schedule to his food allergies and his growth! The boy grew like a weed. A friend of mine reminded me that these kids of ours are on loan from God to raise and guide and the events surrounding what happens in our life are all learning lessons, some for them, others for us as parents.
With that here’s my birthday message to my boy:
Dearest Son,
Since the day I found out you were inside of my womb I knew that you were special. Your movements, naps, food cravings all made me smile. You found ‘your special place’ inside of me and made that your home. Thinking back I now see how symbolic that was. You have found your special place in our family and hearts as well. You were the last piece of our family puzzle. You completed us. You made us a WHOLE unit. I am blessed that God saw fit to send you our way.
You never cease to amaze me, upset me, make me laugh, and teach me how to NOT take life so seriously. You are such an amazing boy. My prayers every night center around, have I been the best mom to you, and how can be a better Mom for you tomorrow. I worry every day that I will let you down. That I will miss something. I worry that I’m not doing the job I was given. I love you and am so grateful for all you have brought to my life and that of our family.
I enjoy watching you grow up but with that growth and age comes so much more. Teaching you how to be a responsible man of color, how to act, teach you morals and values. Help you feel secure in the decisions you make and how to deal with the consequences, both good and bad, around your decisions and actions.
You have a heart of gold, you are loving, kind, warm, and caring. Please never let this world harden your heart because those are the things that will take you further in life.
With all of my love,
Mom
