In our house we look forward to Memorial Day Weekend. In the past when times were ‘normal’ the kids would be off from school and my husband would be home depending on his schedule. Trust I am so grateful for his new job! It has him home more and able to spend that fatherly quality time the kids need at this age. Yeah we’re taking a hit on the reduced income from the job switch but can you REALLY put a dollar amount on family and quality time?
This year with the stay at home order in place, social distancing and covid19 we need to find new ways to connect, celebrate, and honor our holidays and traditions.
Since everyone is home this year I have a opportunity to try some new recipes, create new ways to bond as a family and actually relax. I’ll be prepping the grill to make chicken legs, potato salad and Slowcooker baked beans using a recipe I found here. We have a TON of sidewalk chalk so I’m making it a point to get out side and get creative.
The Memorial Day Foundation is an organization that allows you to donate flowers to a National Cemetery. There are 3 in the Philadelphia area. You can check them out here.
- Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown, PA
- Salem County Veterans Cemetery, NJ
- Lancaster Cemetery, Lancaster, PA
Watch the National Memorial Day Concert on PBS at 8pm on Sunday
Fly a flag. Memorial Day is about remembering those who gave their lives for our country. While many will share a ‘Happy Memorial’ Greeting with friends and family, that type of greeting is no appropriate for today.
Celebrate with some Patriotic Music- I’ve put together a playlist that you can listen to while you’re firing up the grill. It’s full of music that will inspire and motivate you.
Add some curb appeal. You may not be able to have the backyard barbecue of your dreams, but you can still decorate for the occasion. Gather your streamers and string lights, and start decorating.
I’d love to see how you honor this day. Feel free to check in with me on Instagram @wandafthomas
